What is it?
A sorority letter of recommendation is different from a recommendation for a job or scholarship. It serves as an introduction to a chapter by an alumnae member of a sorority.
The letter you use to introduce yourself to alumnae can emphasize aspects of your life that demonstrate your potential to be an involved and committed member, as well as your alignment with the sorority's values and expectations. These aspects may include volunteer work, extracurricular activities, and academic achievements.
The rec can supplement the information that chapters receive through recruitment registration and distinguish you as an individual.
It's important to note that a letter of recommendation is not a guarantee of further opportunities to engage with a chapter or a bid of membership. To explore all the sororities on campus, it's essential to fully participate in the recruitment process with an open mind.
Ok great - so where can I find one?
If you're seeking recommendation letters (recs or riffs) for sorority membership, consider reaching out to your family’s sphere of influence, volunteer partners, acquaintances, colleagues or neighbors who might be willing to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. You can also ask alumnae from the sorority you're interested in from high school teachers, coaches, or counselors. These letters can help demonstrate your character, accomplishments, and potential as a new member.
I can’t find anyone to write a rec for a sorority - now what?
Google “Sorority Name” with “Alumnae” and your city and you will likely find a chapter in your city and they want to help! Facebook is also a great resource!
Example google: Kappa Delta alumnae Austin TX and you’ll find:
